You get to a point where you have to ask yourself “Is this what I’m supposed to be doing?” And depending on the stage of your life your answer may vary.

For instance in my 20’s the answer to this question was “I have to complete an engineering degree, and travel the exciting career path of IT management.”  And that was my answer until I got a programming job that was accompanied by migraines and a constant need to turn the lights off in my office.

Then one day I realized that I loved writing and I had been doing it since I was about 9 years old.  But being a writer (a paid writer) did not line up with what the “Theys” in my life said I needed to do.  So I ignored the quiet comfortable passion that I had for writing.

Today, I realize how absolutely miserable I have been trying to fit into the “corporate box”, and I am very frustrated by how much time I wasted trying to do and be what others thought I should be.  That was time that I could have been writing and learning my craft, but I ignored the obvious and then shifted into a cycle of playing catch up.

And now, once a week, I have to give myself a pep talk about having big dreams that don’t fit into anyone else’s ideology, while working a “day job”  to pay for the education and other financial obligations I have acquired on my long quest to the obvious.

So what’s my point…Well its simple – “Be you, do you, and smurf anyone who tells you to stop dreaming.”

Start Your Own Business Using Your Resume!

Try this instead of listening to the naysayers:

Dream Big – We all have the amazing gift of dreaming.  Not those weird movies that play while we sleep and require some Freudian interpreter to decode, but to hope and imagine ourselves attaining goals that we have.

I have made all kinds of mistakes when it comes to dreaming.  Ignoring them, trying to make them fit into my reality, and trying to change them to line up with easier processes and goals; until finally a former mentor of mine told me I needed to “Dream BIG enough for my faith to kick in.”  It was as if he gave me permission to have big dreams and believing that they could come true.

So the first step to making your dreams a reality is simple, give yourself permission to have great big fantastic dreams.  And don’t forget to guard your dream.  That’s right, be mindful of who you share this dream with, because you cannot afford to let someone else’s lack of vision get you of course.

Once you have a dream in mind, write it out and put it somewhere you can see it daily.  This goes to the old adage “out of sight, out of mind.”  Keeping your vision in the forefront of your mind daily is important to holding yourself accountable as you work to attain your dream.

Plan Big – Make a list of 5 to 10 big things that would have to happen to make your Dream a Reality.

Try Big – Each day try something that gets you closer to the steps/ things on your Plan list

Repeat – note what did and didn’t work for the purpose of growing and planning better and repeat the process

Just a personal pep talk I thought I’d share in case someone else needed it.  😀
